Community Work
PEOPLE HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD
Exploring power alongside some inspiring, radical, wonderful people is one of Akshita's favourite pasttimes. Though her art work is inherently rooted in various different community landscapes, Akshita has a particular penchant for social politcs and all its bureaucratic admin, for thriving under pressure, and figuring out how to make a difference in a world with pre-existing systems and thought patterns.
The projects below are a few acts of more community focussed work that Akshita has been involved in:
Laugh In the Face of Extinction
A collective of and for performance and activism as a regenerative practice and form of protest, rooted in climate justice, peace and human rights.
RBC People and Planet
Rose Bruford College's network of student organisers with People and Planet; the largest student network fighting for climate, worker and migrant justice from UK universities; previous campaigns with this division have included Fossil Fuel Free Declaration and the Divest Borders campaign.
Built on Blood Collective
Built on Blood is a creative anti-racist and anti-colonialist movement that originated at Rose Bruford College, exploring and enacting solidarity and social change through care-centred, justice-focussed art.
UCU Rising
UCU rallying for better pay, working conditions, stable contracts and fair pensions through strike action.
Bruford Bathroom Alliance
The Bruford Bathroom Alliance was a successful local campus-wide campaign to get gender-neutral bathrooms with the appropriate facilities-based signage on campus aside from disabled toilets, to improve inclusivity and safety on campus and to chase up a delayed promise. After months of listening to the student body, collaborating with staff, taking creative direct action and having discussions around progression, gender neutral bathrooms with facility based signage on the doors were put up around the buildings!
UN Women UK
UN Women UK is an organisation working towards ensuring every woman and girl has access to safety, choice and a voice.
Student Union President
A powerful position of advocacy that Akshita held, and used for championing student voices alongside the rest of the Student Union team.
Charity Fundraising
