Semyon is depressed and disheartened by his slum-dwelling existence so he resolves to kill himself, much to the annoyance of his long-suffering wife Masha and his wise-cracking mother-in-law Serafima. As soon as word gets around about his plans, Semyon is visited by a cast of colourful characters all determined not to pursuade him out of it, but to persuade him to kill himself in the name of their cause! Semyon finds himself at the centre of a movement much bigger than he ever imagined and things soon take a very unexpected turn, which will change everyone's lives for ever.
